كاثوليكية وبروتستانتية : منذ الحقبة قبل التاريخية، احتفلت الحضارات الأوروبية بامتداد الأيام وذلك بتبادل الهداياوإحياء الحفلات. ففي عهد الرومان، كانت تمتد حفلة ساتورناليا Saturnalia لعدة أيام بما فيها من حفلات وألعاب حظ. كما كان الحال بالنسبة للقبائل الجرمانية التي كانت تحيي الاحتفالات والرقصات. ولا زال البلغاريون والبولونيون يخلدون هذه التقاليد. ويبدو أن جيزس دي نزاريت Jézus de Nazareth قد ولد في الربيع، غير أن البابا جول الأول Jules 1er (القرن الرابع) قدم عيد الميلاد هذا إلى الخامس والعشرين من دسمبر بهدف منافسة الاحتفالات الوثنية الشتوية.
