عطلة علمانية : يتم الحتفال بهذا العيد في الخميس الرابع من شهر نومبر وكثيرا ما يأخذ الأمريكيون يوم إجازة في الغد كي يتعموا بنهاية أسبوع أطول. فيزورون الأحباب والأصدقاء. ويعود تاريخ الاحتفال هذا إلى عام 1621، أي سنة بعد استقرار المتشددين في الماساشوستس عاظمين على ممارسة دينهم بكل حرية. وبعد فصل شتاء قارس أودى بحياة العديد منهم، لجؤوا إلى القبائل الهندية المجاورة. ولكن في فصل الخريف التالي، نعموا بمحصول جيد ففكروا في إحياء حفلة للتعبير عن امتنانهم، قد صارت بعد ذلك ضمن التقاليد الوطنية.
