After many conflicts with the Spanish, war broke out in 1796. A Spanish army was sent to expel the British settlers. But in 1798 The battle of St. George Cay was won by a handful of locals Britishers.

كاثوليكية وبروتستانتية : منذ الحقبة قبل التاريخية، احتفلت الحضارات الأوروبية بامتداد الأيام وذلك بتبادل الهداياوإحياء الحفلات. ففي عهد الرومان، كانت تمتد حفلة ساتورناليا Saturnalia لعدة أيام بما فيها من حفلات وألعاب حظ. كما كان الحال بالنسبة للقبائل الجرمانية التي كانت تحيي الاحتفالات والرقصات. ولا زال البلغاريون والبولونيون يخلدون هذه التقاليد. ويبدو أن جيزس دي نزاريت Jézus de Nazareth قد ولد في الربيع، غير أن البابا جول الأول Jules 1er (القرن الرابع) قدم عيد الميلاد هذا إلى الخامس والعشرين من دسمبر بهدف منافسة الاحتفالات الوثنية الشتوية.

عطلة علمانية : المسيرة الخضراء هي مسيرة لاسترجاع الصحراء المغربية (بالإسبانية: Marcha verde) اسم أطلق على تظاهرة جماهيرية ذات هدف استراتيجي نظمتها الحكومة المغربية في شهر نوفمبر لعام 1975 لحمل إسبانيا على تسليمها إقليم الصحراء المتنازع عليه، وهو إقليم شبه حضري مستقل كان واقعًا تحت الاحتلال الإسباني. ورقة نقدية فئة 100 درهم مغربي تعود إلى عام 1991 وتحيي ذكرى المسيرة الخضراء. تعد المسيرة الخضراء إشارة بدء المسيرة من الملك حسن الثاني لعبور الصحراء المغربية. وقد لوَّحَ المتظاهرون بالأعلام المغربية ولافتات تدعوا إلى عودة الصحراء المغربية وصور لملك المغرب وبالقرآن الكريم. كما اتُخذ اللون الأخضر لوصف هذه المسيرة كرمز للإسلام.
